Maria, I would download the entire Arras 1.4 release again, unzip it, delete the old one from your WP themes folder, and FTP the new download to the same folder. Adding stray files into a theme is asking for problems. I know the 1.4 is a clean install because I'm running it on my own sites.

Hi again, I have since found out that the thumb.php file is missing from my arras theme. Does this make any sense? The help person on my hosting couldn't help me with this. DO you think I can just find this file and upload it to my account myself?

thanks

Maria, check out the screenshot above to find the new Wordpress thumbnails feature.

If that still doesn't work for you, then I'd suspect a bad Wordpress install by process of elimination. Ask your hosting service whether you can keep all of your content if you nuke the old Wordpress install. (I should know this, but like you, I try to leave my sites alone if they're working for me.)

Hi Lorecee, I have updated to wordpress 2.9.1 and installed the 1.4 version of arras but it still doesn't work. I don't see the thumbnails option in the control panel. It looks the same as it always was.

Are there any other ways to know you have a bad wordpress installatation? I'm pretty sure it was installed fine, but who knows. If I uninstalled would I have to go through the whole long drawn out wordpress installation again?

thanks so much for your help, very much appreciated

Hi Maria: if you're not using 1.4 update of Arras, I highly recommend getting it. Did you update Wordpress to 2.9.1 first before you installed the updated theme? WP 2.9.1 has a "thumbnails" function over in the right sidebar of the control panel when you're in the "post" screen, which you use instead of the custom fields process that I describe above for Arras 1.3.6.

If you've already tried using Wordpress thumbnails and it's still not working, then you might have a faulty Wordpress installation. This happened to me. I fixed it by saving all of my posts, then deleting Wordpress from the Fantastico control panel, then deleting the subdomain from my hosting account. Then I reversed the process, and voila, problem solved. I know this is a lot of work, especially if you have a big site, but a bad WP install can cause problems down the road even if you're not using Arras. In my case I did something dumb--I had moved my site to another host and deleted the subdomain but left the WP installation for the site in my account and tried to pick it up when I moved the site back to it. Learned my lesson: you can't add a deleted subdomain back over an existing WP install and expect it to work right.

Good luck, let me know how it goes.

Hi Lorecee, this article has been really helpful and I was delighted to hear that arras has released a new version. I was unable to get to the bottom of the thumb nails issue before and tried it now but it still doesn't work. I have uploaded the thumb image and can see it is there and attached to the right post, but I still have just blank thumbnails.

Any ideas? I'm desprate to figure this out and have just about given up,

thanks a million,

If you want to run ad text in either of the sidebars, you have to use a text widget and make sure the sidebar has a title. Widgets like Easy AdSense will break the theme.

Optimum sizes for images are as follows:

top carousel bar: 608 x 205
featured posts: 205 x 110

So Arras likes flat, wide images. You can resize the featured post images, but your text block below them will adjust to fit the width you set, which can mess up your grid.
